"[T]he United States isn't set up for anything but a two-party system, which is why nothing but Democrat and Republican really matter on the polls."
That is absolutely true. The United States ISN'T set up for anything but a two party system. However, the bi-partisan system does not work. It becomes a power struggle and an internal war-state. President George Washington warned against the formation of political parties in his farewell address, which can be seen here under the heading "The Dangers of Political Parties". Like President Washington, I also acknowledge that it is natural for people to organize into groups. But that doesn't have to apply to every situation. A governing body should be just that--a unified body.
Analogy 1
On my body I have feet at the end of my legs and hands on the end of my arms, ears on the side of my head and eyes, a nose, and a mouth on my face. Now, my legs and feet have a different function than my arms and hands, but that doesn't mean the goal of one is to render the other useless. In the same way I smell with my nose, but my nose doesn't become incensed by the ability of my mouth to taste or my eyes to see. Each part has a role independent of the others, but they are all working at the common goal of making me one complete person. There actually are circumstances when the body does work against itself, come to think of it. Any guess what that is called? It's called cancer.
Analogy 2
Another analogy for a unified body is that of a team. Any team really, but for this analogy I am going to use American Football. Each player has his specific position--be he a line-man, a tight end, quarterback, kicker, etc. They must operate as one in order to achieve their goal of winning the game. The quarterback doesn't try to make the plays by completely ignoring his blockers and the coverage they provide any more than the kicker decides to kick an onside kick without the consent and prior knowledge of the rest of the team. If this sort of unity is not in place, a team is weakened. If you have an individual or a group of individuals trying to take the team one direction while others are working in a direction opposite that, the result will be a failed team, and sustained losses.
Conclusion
In short, the United States government, under a bi-partisan system, is a cancerous body; a losing team.
As the 2012 election swiftly approaches...
There actually is a man running for the GOP nomination with Libertarian ideals. And you know, I will most be voting Republican because of it, if he gets the nomination. If he doesn't, I can honestly say I will not vote Republican or Democrat in the upcoming election. They say it is often the lesser of two evils one must decide between when voting, but I don't think there IS a lesser evil if say it is Barack Obama v Michelle Bachmann or Rick Santorum or Rick Perry. I've never rooted for a Republican candidate before as they tend to be a)extremely right wing (very socially conservative, fiscal conservativism is very sound economic policy, even if it is tied with the Republican party) or b) seemingly under educated and unfit to serve as the "leader of the free world". However, if we look to recent democratic presidents/nominees yes, we see progress in social liberalism such as gay rights and logical pro-choice arguments. But this comes at the expense of shoddy spending policies and extreme economic turmoil. Ron Paul is running for the nomination under the Republican ticket, AND he is the greatest hope we have right now for moving away from a bi-partisan system and going back to the ideals this country was founded upon, namely: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Plain and simple. His foreign policy is the only one that makes any sense (get out of wars we don't need to be in and don't enter into foreign wars so hastily in the future), his stance on the drug war is the only one that makes any sense (it is a failure, prohibition doesn't work, and the money spent could be used much more efficiently), and his views on legislating morality (not doing so) are the only ones that make any sense. I am ashamed of the media and their lack of coverage of this man, but I am proud in all of the people coming out to stand with Dr. Paul irregardless of this. He has far and away the most support from active-duty US military persons; he has ideas backed by those on the left and the right, proving he can bring unity between the parties and isn't all about one agenda or another.
If you have about 20 minutes, please watch the videos below and get a better understanding of from where it is I am coming.
Below is a very educational and politically sound video advocating for Ron Paul in the 2012 election. I believe it emphasizes the importance of history, and it promotes learning from history so as not to make past mistakes. Also, for those who agree with supporting our troops but not with supporting the wars our government expects them to fight, this is evidence of how we can truly support or troops while also speaking against these wars.
And this video here is simply an American standing up for his rights and for the rights of every American. We need more like him.
