It's funny how we are allowed to abuse our selves while remaining "socially acceptable".
We can smoke and we can drink and we can overeat.
And sure these things aren't embraced with open arms (for the most part), but they are given excuses.
"He's having a hard time."
"She doesn't know what else to do."
But we can't physically harm ourselves.
And under eating is judged almost equally as strongly.
People who cope in that way...there must be something wrong with them, right?
I'm going to call bullshit.
When really, it's all the same.
It's all a way for us to cope.
They are all methods of self-abuse through which we achieve some sort of comfort.
Me, I smoke. I do it socially, but I also do it to relieve stress. The nicotine counteracts anxieties to a degree.
I have PLENTY of friends who drink to excess, the kill the pain of monotony and lack of fulfillment, in a lot of the cases.
I have multiple friends who cut themselves to counteract anxiety.
I have friends who eat so little they don't get the necessary nutrients on a day to day basis, and their health suffers because of it, all in the name of self and perceived image.
I'm failing to see how there is any sort of difference in any of this, when it comes down to it.
When broken down to the nitty-gritty.
We all know what we are doing isn't healthy, but we also know that it has become a part of who we are and it is simply a facet of how we get by.
So to the drunks, the habitual smokers, the cutters, the over and under eaters--
The only life which we control is our own. What anyone has to say about your personal choices is irrelevent.
You know what's right and what is wrong. If you want to change something because you know you need to change something, great. Get the help necessary and get where you want to be.
Short of that though, this life is yours. Do what it takes to succeed, or at least be happy.
Because if you are happy, fuck the rest.
